[source] MEXICO CITY - A five-year-old Mexican boy whose eyes were allegedly gouged out by his mother as part of a drug-fueled ritual “to save the world” is expected to live, but has been left completely blind, health authorities said Friday.
The boy, identified by authorities only as Fernando, was taken to a hospital in Mexico City after police discovered the mother clutching her eyeless son at a home in the working-class suburb of Nezahualcoyotl early Thursday.
The Mexico City Health Department said the boy lost both eyes and was suffering some leakage of cerebral fluid. He was in intensive care and was listed in guarded condition, but doctors said in a statement that such leakage normally stops by itself and that no brain surgery is planned at the moment.
The chief prosecutor for Mexico state, where Nezahualcoyotl is located, said the boy’s mother had apparently urged others to help her mutilate her son in order “to prevent an earthquake and save the world.”
Several adults were at the home reciting a prayer, and had apparently been fasting because “the world was going to end,” said Nezahualcoyotl assistant police Chief Samuel Cuevas Monroy, quoting the boy’s grandmother. The mother, identified as Maria del Carmen Rios, 28, reportedly told the boy to close his eyes and when he refused, she decided to gouge them out “to clean them.”
Some reported the mother had become incoherent and began shouting “Let’s kill him, to get the Devil out of him,” Neme said.
Most of the others present at the time were relatives, including the boy’s aunt and uncle, and authorities said the adults appeared to have been consuming unspecified drugs. The mother and seven others were being held pending charges.
The 22-year-old aunt allegedly held the boy while the mother gouged out his eyes, apparently with her fingers.
Neme said it was not clear if the mutilation was linked to any sort of religious belief.
Eight followers of the cult known as “Santa Muerte, ” or Saint Death, were recently charged with the sacrificial killings of two 10-year-old boys and a 55-year-old woman in northern Sonora state. The cult had never before been linked to human sacrifice.
Mexico’s most notorious case of ritual sacrifice came with the “narco-satanicos” killings of the 1980s. Fifteen bodies, many of them with signs of ritual sacrifice, were unearthed at a ranch outside the border city of Matamoros, across from Brownsville, Texas.

My story: My name is Amanda, and I am 18 years old. I have lived with my mom my whole life, who is not religious. Growing up, I remember my mom telling me that “God” is someone parents make up so that their children will behave a certain way. I still to this day remember her telling me that. When I was a very young kid, I went to church, but only to play with my friends and the toys in the children’s room.
As I became a pre-teen, I went to church with my friends. Not to praise “God” or because I was a Christian, I went because there was always games, food, and people my age to be around. I always knew I wasn’t the same as everyone there, and it was when I was 16 I decided my religion. I believe in science. I don’t believe in things that you can’t see or prove. Therefore, I decided to become an Atheist. I have had a lot of my friends question it. As long as I don’t shove my beliefs down there throat, they don’t bring up theres at all.
I love being Atheist, and I will stay that way my whole life. I will not have a religious wedding, and I will not force my kids to be Atheist, I will let them CHOSE what they want to be, and I’m fine with that.

To say that I’m profoundly disappointed would be a pretty severe understatement. This bill, and others like it, are an outrage, and I wish we had legislators in Missouri who had higher priorities than exploiting their positions to marginalize and insult the LGBT community.
What really worries me is that we’ve seen similar polices, from the tragedies in Minnesota to the rash of suicides across the nation, that polices like this not only contribute to a culture that poisons the lives of gay teens and their families, but prevent teachers, administrators and other educators from taking the steps necessary to stop it. They end up untrained because of the intentionally ambiguous nature of these laws and made to fear for their jobs if they do the right thing and punish bullies in their schools. And, as if that isn’t enough, this bill also deliberately seeks to destroy the gay-straight alliances that offer support and friendship to gay students.
I’d really appreciate it if everyone who reads this takes a few minutes to write the sponsor of the bill, Steve Cookson (Steve.Cookson@house.mo.gov ) and let him know your opposition to it.

Parents bury infant alive on advice from astrologer
(THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - A nine-day-old infant was buried alive by the parents on the advice of an astrologer in Hapur, in Uttar Pradesh, northern India.
Malaysia Nanban reported that the ill-advised parents had put the baby in an earthen pot and buried it three feet in the ground behind their house on April 12.
Neighbours who saw the parents repeatedly going to the burial site lodged a police report on Friday. Police nabbed the couple after a tip-off. Surprisingly, the baby survived.
The child was rushed to a local hospital where his condition is said to be improving. The couple, Kiran Pal, 37, and his wife, 34, as well as astrologer Nizaam, will be charged with attempted murder.
What the fuck?! The things people will do for their outrageous and outdated beliefs!!

Exorcist expertise sought after Saskatoon ‘possession’
[Source] A case of what is being called possible demonic possession in Saskatoon has prompted local church officials to consider the need for an exorcist.
CBC News spoke with a Catholic priest involved in the case, which arose in March, and agreed not to identify participants in order to protect their privacy.
According to church officials, a priest was called to a Saskatoon home by a woman who said her uncle showed signs of being possessed by the devil. The woman believed a priest’s blessing could help the distraught man.
At the home, the priest encountered a shirtless middle-aged man, slouched on a couch and holding his head in his hands.
The man had used a sharp instrument to carve the word Hell on his chest.
When the priest entered the room, the man spoke in the third person, saying “He belongs to me. Get out of here,” using a strange voice.
The priest told CBC News that he had never seen anything like this and was concerned enough to call police, for safety reasons.
He said he then blessed the man, saying he belonged to the good side, to Jesus. With that, the man’s voice returned to normal for a short time.
The only thing in need of exorcism is religion itself!!

SALT LAKE CITY—A new claim has surfaced that the Mormon church has posthumously baptized another Holocaust victim: this time Anne Frank.
The allegations come just a week after the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints apologized when it was brought to light that the parents of Holocaust survivor and Jewish rights advocate Simon Wiesenthal were posthumously baptized by church members at temples in Arizona and Utah in late January.
Researcher Helen Radkey, a former Mormon who revealed the Wiesenthal baptisms, said this week she found Frank’s name in proxy baptism records dated Feb. 18, showing the ritual was performed in the Dominican Republic.
The Mormon church almost immediately issued a statement, though it didn’t mention Frank by name.
“The church keeps its word and is absolutely firm in its commitment to not accept the names of Holocaust victims for proxy baptism,” the Salt Lake City-based church said. “It is distressing when an individual wilfully violates the church’s policy and something that should be understood to be an offering based on love and respect becomes a source of contention.”
Frank was a Jewish teenager forced into hiding in Amsterdam during the Holocaust and killed in a concentration camp. Her diary was published in 1947.
Church officials did not return telephone calls and emails from Associated Press on Thursday. A spokeswoman for the Anne Frank House museum in Amsterdam declined to comment.
Larry Bair, the president of the Mormon temple of Santo Domingo, said Thursday he had looked into the reports but was unable to verify that Frank had been baptized. If it did occur, Bair said, “it was a mistake.” [read more]

Hasidic Man Admits Burning Neighbor In New York Religious Dispute
NEW CITY, NY, Feb 7 (Reuters) - A Hasidic Jewish man from New York state pleaded guilty to assault on Tuesday for setting a neighbor on fire because he wasn’t praying with the rest of the community, leaving the man badly burned.
Shaul Spitzer, 18, of New Square, New York, admitted to lighting Aron Rottenberg ablaze after learning that he had disobeyed a prayer order by the Grand Rebbe of the Hasidic enclave about 35 miles north of New York City.
He pleaded guilty to assault in a New York court and faces up to 10 years in prison, although Judge William Kelly said he would likely receive a 5-year sentence.
Spitzer, who worked for Grand Rebbe David Twersky, admitted in court that he used a heavy duty propane lighter to set Rottenberg on fire in May 2011.
He lit him on fire when Rottenberg confronted him after Spitzer had stuffed gasoline-soaked shirts into a bag, lit it on fire and threw it onto the porch of Rottenberg’s home, he admitted. The family was sleeping inside, court documents said.
Prosecutor Stephen Moore said Rottenberg spent more than a month in the hospital for severe burns.
Under the plea deal, charges of attempted murder and arson were dismissed. Spitzer could have faced a 25-year prison sentence for those charges. Outside court, Spitzer’s attorney Kenneth Gribetz said his client had been trying to cause mischief, not to kill anyone.
“This is a young boy who has no criminal intent,” he said. “He’s not a criminal … He should be given a chance to get back on the right track.”
Spitzer, who will be sentenced in April, entered his plea on the day jury selection was set to begin in the case. Rottenberg was in court and told the judge he consented to the plea deal.
Court documents said Rottenberg’s family had received several threats and had their property vandalized for not praying in the community’s main synagogue.

The shock figure was announced by American cardinal Joseph William Levada as he opened a conference on the wide scale phenomenon which has rocked the Roman Catholic church with cases reported all over the world.
…Two years ago monsignor Charles Scicluna, the Maltese priest at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in charge of investigating paedophile priests had given an interview saying there had been ‘3,000 cases of sexual abuse the last 50 years’. He said that of these 300 cases involved allegations of ‘genuine paedophilia’… and of these 3,000 cases, 600 priests had been defrocked while in other situations the offenders had been deemed ‘too old’ to punish but given other penalties such as bans on celebrating Mass or hearing confessions.
